Alex Johnson: On Comps and The Swarm

Last summer, during the Vail Bouldering World Cup, we got the chance to catch up with American boulderer Alex Johnson. We talked about her views on competitions and her ambitious project: The Swarm.

Alex Johnson is one of the most acomplished climbers in America. Outdoors she’s been climbing double-digit problems for years. Indoors, she’s been USA Champion and has won two World Cups ( Vail 2008 and Greifensee 2010) and made finals in many more.

In 2011 she followed the IFSC World Cup circuit all over the world, placing 8th and having really good results (including ending up in the dreaded 7th place 3 times…). But apparently she’s not planing on repeating the experience due to its high costs and low returns to her and her sponsors.

But she will return to her long-term project: The Swarm. A problem graded V14 | 8B+ and located in Bishop, California. Sending it would put her in the very short list of woman who have climbed a V14 boulder problem. She says it fits her style and seem to be determined to get it done, fingers crossed!
