Military World Winter Games

I was watching an interview with Anna Stöhr when she said she was going to “the Military World Championships”. I didn’t know what she was talking about. So I figured it out.

The Military World Games, a sort of Olympic Games for army members, are being held in Annecy, France, during this week. This event has been taking place since 1995, when the first edition was held in Rome to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

Organized by the International Military Sports Council (the second largest sports body in the world after the IOC, according to Wikipedia), the event will gather nearly 1000 athletes from 40 countries.

I must confess I was a little surprised to learn that this games include Sport Climbing and Bouldering. Now that there’s so much talking about the possible inclusion of climbing in the Olympic Games is interesting to see that climbing is already part of some other multi-sport events.

6 really well-known climbers will participate:

  • From Austria: Anna Stohr, Jakob Schubert and Kilian Fischhuber
  • From Slovenia: Maja Vidmar, Mina Markovic and Klemen Becan

I would be surprised if the winners (for both sport climbing and bouldering) were not among those 6.

Here’s the schedule (GMT+1) for bouldering (though I don’t think you’ll be able to follow the competition online):

  • Qualification: Wednesday 27, 9am
  • Semis: Thu 28, 10:45am
  • Finals: Thursday 28, 3pm
