Paul Robinson, sendfest in Maltatal

American crusher Paul Robinson has been on a mission in the Austrian bouldering area of Maltatal. He had the goal of repeating the mythical line Bügeleisen. Although the weather conditions prevented him from repeating it from the sit start (8C | V15), he did the standing start along with some other super hard lines.

This time the weather was perfect and everything felt right. On my first day trying the line this year, I found myself at the top, amazed and just blown away by the circumstances that have led me to where I am today, in Austria and not just below the climb but standing on top of Bügeleisen!

Bügeleisen was first climbed by legend Klem Loskot back in 2001. Since then it has seen only 9 repetitions. It is now considered 8B+ | V14. In 2014, Nalle Hukkataival climbed it from a sitting start. The sitting start has also been climbed by Jakob Schubert, he graded it 8C | V15.

Unfortunately, Bügeleisen got pretty wet right after Robinson’s ascent and the American couldn’t do climbed it from the sit, despite having done all the moves.

Even though the weather was far from perfect, Robinson managed to climb several hard lines: Wrestling with an Alligator 8B | V13, The Lady in Black 8B/+ V13/14, Hide and Sick and The Souce (both 8B+ | V14).

During the trip, the American has been producing impressive videos of his ascents. He’s been honing his film-making skills for years and it looks like at this point he can put together high production value videos while on the road. Check out his YouTube channel here.

Update: Here’s the video of Hide and Sick
